Warren Buffett said “the U.S. Treasury bond bubble of late 2008 may be regarded as almost equally extraordinary” as the Internet bubble of the late 1990s.

Why would he make such a bold statement? A quick look at bonds over the past 40 or so years shows that the yield on 10-year U.S. Treasuries peaked in the mid-teens back in the early 1980s and has steadily fallen since then, to get us to the 3.9% yield they are currently experiencing. For comparison, 10-year UK gilts currently yield a very similar 3.8%.

Despite the fact that Warren Buffett has been recently criticized, his strategy certainly still pays off.

Like any other investor, Warren Buffett has had some bad days. However, last week Berkshire Hathaway (BRK) stock gained about 23% while the S&P 500 fell about 29%. Berkshire’s per-share book value from the end of 2002 through the end of 2008 also grew 9.3% annually. The S&P only grew an average of 1.5% in that time.

Buffett’s strategy is to look into true bargains many investors have feared. As the current crisis continues to work itself out, fears will eventually diminish more and soon enough investors will recognize what they have been missing out on. This is Buffett’s strategy and it has and is currently working out for him and Berkshire Hathaway.

2008 has been a year in which the stock market has been very difficult to decipher. Calculating Long-term value of firms is not as easy as Buffett may portray.

However, Warren Buffett has had a profitable strategy during bear markets with the focus on the long-term intrinsic value of a company. His strategy relies on focusing on value and avoiding quickly-growing companies with expensive stocks.

However, this strategy has been recently questioned by Richard Sparks of Schaeffer’s Investment Research. Richard states that it is nearly impossible to assess today what the future profits will be of any given firm. He further states that some financial stocks would not even survive the economic crisis. Long-term value is difficult to determine through profits, cash flow, or other measures says Richard.

When the stock market is moving very quickly, long term is not accurately measured. “Stocks lost a third of their value in one month last fall, and jumped 20% higher in three weeks this March. Buy or sell a position too early or too late and the effect on your portfolio could be disastrous” as stated in Businessweek.

All investing styles have had their downfalls and its just a difficult time to invest. Last year, for instance, Morningstar data showed a large-cap value funds drop of 37.5%, while large-cap growth funds are off 34.5% and large-cap blend funds lost 36.4%.

“Traditional value strategies did so well in the last bear market,” says Jeff Layman, director of investment services for BKD Wealth Advisors.

The best explanation for the poor performance of many value investors last year was due to financial stocks. These investors were burned by bank stocks since they looked like good deals by the end of 2007.

Warren Buffett had its fall by holding on to shares of U.S. Bancorp (USB), down 53% last year; Wells Fargo (WFC), off 49%; and American Express (AXP), which fell 68%.

The real estate firm was shut down on Monday. It was accused of siphoning off hundreds of thousands of dollars into Philippine bank accounts with false claims that Warren Buffett was chairman.

The Securities and Exchange Commission obtained a court order freezing the assets of International Realty Holdings Inc. of Palmdale and its operators.

The SEC filed a 10-page fraud lawsuit against the company’s operators and IRH on Monday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.

“I am not, nor have I ever been, the ‘Honorary Chairman’ of the Board of Directors of IRH,” Buffett said in the declaration. “I have never had any personal business relationship with IRH.” IRH had also falsely claimed that the company was 50% owned by Swiss banking giant Credit Suisse and promised annual returns of up to 15%.

Warren Buffett’s name was also misspelled in its investment brochures as “Buffet” and a photo of Buffett with eight supposed IRH employees were actually students from the University of Michigan business school.

Many investors had invested thousands of dollars into IRH and it raised at least $485,000 and probably $700,000 from at least 15 inevestors in six states, the SEC lawsuit said.

“Of the approximately $700,000 deposited into IRH’s accounts as of Feb. 28, 2009 (at least $485,000 of which is investor money), no less than $535,000 has been wired by IRH into bank accounts held by a law firm in the Philippines,” the suit said.

The SEC is working to have the funds returned to the U.S.
