Warren Buffett is to release first-quarter results of Berkshire Hathaway May 8, six days after the company’s annual meeting to take place May 2nd in Omaha, Nebraska.

Berkshire has posted five straight declines on deteriorating results at insurance units and liabilities from derivative bets on world stock markets.

This data is to be carefully evaluated by investors since Berkshire Hathaway has not had a pleasant 2009. Mr.Buffett has been heavily criticized for investing in companies such as Wells Fargo and American Express, which has been down in stock value.

On top of Buffett’s choice of stocks, there are doubts of any positive trend for Berkshire Hathaway. Berkshire may not do too well since it has business in the jewelry and housing industries, which have not been profitable recently.

Others argue that Berkshire has had a good run and that Buffett has proven that investments can pay off if you know how to work with them. The Buffett Way is a book many consider to be helpful to learn to invest like the oracle of Omaha.

There is fear, however as to how the company will be continuing its successful investement streak like its shown in the past. With Byron Trott out, who is to say Berkshire will keep doing well without him? That is a major issue for stock holders of BRK and something to take into consideration before investing in the company.

Watch interviews based on Berkshire Hathaway’s 1st quarter release here

Warren Buffett’s firm, Berkshire Hathaway, is paying more for debt than its fellow competitors. Mortgage lenders Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE) have lower costs.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the mortgage lenders that lost a combined amount of $108.8 billion in 2008. Bank of America Corp (BAC) is also paying a lower interest on notes under a program in which the U.S. agrees to guarantee debt.

Berkshire Hathaway has not had a bad previous year in comparison to practically bankrupt competitors. However, Berkshire is to pay 4 percent to bondholders who bought $750 million of the firm’s AAA-rated debt last week.

Berkshire’s competitors, in the other hand, were able to find buyers for notes paying 2.375 percent or less. The Government has aided falling companies in need of multiple helpings of U.S. rescue funds.

For now, various financials may report “profits” but in the long run those companies who have been falling may indeed continue to do so in the future.

Warren Buffett told the Wall Street Journal that Berkshire Hathaway plans to invest in a new firm. The new firm is to be created by Byron Trott, who is an investment banker having worked closely with Warren Buffett in Berkshire Hathaway.

Byron Trott is leaving Goldman Sachs to start the new merchant-banking firm to be called BDT Capital Partners.

The Journal says the fund will invest in “family-controlled and entrepreneurial companies” and “could grow to about $2 billion.” Warren Buffett further states that people who have worked with Trott in the past will probably invest in his new fund.

This does not affect Goldman Sachs since the person to take over after Trott’s departure has been allocated.

Byron Trott is credited alongside Warren Buffett for Berkshire’s investment last year in Goldman Sachs and General Electric. He is also credited for playing a key role in Berkshire’s involvement with last year’s $23 billion acquisition of Wrigley by Mars.

Bloomber data showed that the company issued the debt, which priced to yield 282 basis points more than similar-maturity Treasuries. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point.

Standard & Poor’s is reviewing the firm’s credit rating for a possible downgrade. The debt is rated Aaa by Moody’s Investors Service and AAA by S&P, their top rankings as shown by Bloomberg.

The sales’ net proceeds will go to Vanderbilt Mortgage & Finance Inc, which is a unit of Berkshire’s Clayton Homes Inc. Clayton Homes Inc. makes manufactured housing and provides loans to buyers of homes sold by Clayton.

Warren Buffett included in his annual letter that companies without government backing, such as Berkshire, are facing higher borrowing costs.

Berkshire may lose its top-level AAA rating because values have fallen in its equity portfolio and capital has shrunk as stated by the S&P.

There is “absolutely nothing out of the ordinary,”about today’s offering, John Iten, S&P’s director in the North American insurance group, said today in a telephone interview.

After a sharp rally in the ivestment bank’s shares in recent months, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. held by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. are close to becoming a lot more valuable.

Berkshire invested $5 billion in Goldman last year attaining 50,000 cumulative perpetual preferred shares in the investment bank paying 10% per year. Berkshire also has the right to buy 43.5 million shares of Goldman common stock til 2013 and can be exercised for an aggregate cost of $5 billion, or $115 per share.

Although the credit crisis has sunk into deeper waters, Goldman has doubled since November of last year climbing up to $111.93. As soon as the Goldman stock passes the $115 per share mark, Berkshire’s warrants will be “in the money”.

This is a very good sign for Warren Buffett because as soon as the stock price reaches any amount past $115, he can buy Goldman shares for $115 and pocket the difference. If for example shares reach $160 then Buffett can pocket $45 as profit.

Apart from Goldman, Berkshire has similar warrants in General Electric Co when Buffett invested in the industrial conglomerate last October. The GE warrants can be exercised for an aggregate cost of $3 billion, or $22.25 per share.

GE shares closed at $10.43 on Monday so Buffett is still deeply out of the money on this one.
